IPv6 Support
« on: March 03, 2021, 06:32:46 PM »
A customer asked if any PLCs or HMI currently support IPv6 or are planning to in the near future.  I did not know of any off hand.  Does Advanced HMI have any plans for migrating to IPv6?  Are there any IPv6 capable PLC out yet?

I don't foresee support for it in the near future. I'm not even aware of any PLCs that support it.

Curious question, even if PLC's and AHMI did support IPv6, why would one want use it?

IPv6 strikes me as something that is necessary for the larger internet, but local networks?  Who needs a trillion addresses?  Why have a more complicated addressing scheme when the number of addresses isn't needed?

I see this:
Quote from: phone conversation
So did you ping the device first?
No, how do I do that?
type: (reads over the phone) p i n g [space] i p v 6 [space] 2 0 0 1 : B
Wait, that first one, was it a b?
No it was a P, as in Paul
Okay, go ahead
So: p i n g [space] i p v 6 [space] 2 0 0 1 : B
Was that a T
No, it was a B as in Bravo
Ok, sorry, where were we at?
ping [space] ipv6 [space]  2 0 0 1 : D B 8 : 8 4 7 f : a 3 8 5 : 3 4 d d : : 4 5
Press Enter, did it respond?
No
Read it back to me

Good point about local devices. But the corporate network on the 2nd port may need IPv6.

Hey,

We did use arduino to get the data on ipv6 and then used the same to convert it back to ipv4. Just dig in you will find lots of support on arduino /raspberry pi forums
